WMTV/Ch. 15 reports on newest ‘Doctor Dyslexia Dude’ book from UW–Madison’s Robinson

UW-Madison’s Shawn Robinson and his newest book were recently featured in a WMTV/Ch. 15 report headlined, “Author writes second book for children with dyslexia after learning to read at 18.”

Unable to read as child, the report notes how Robinson was kicked out of high school as a sophomore. Now, as researcher, he focuses on African American boys with dyslexia and aims to create new research pathways related to removing literacy-related barriers to the U.S. workforce. He also serves as the director at large of the International Dyslexia Association.

Dr. Dyslexia Dude and the Battle for Resilience book coverRobinson, a senior research associate with the Wisconsin Equity and Inclusion Lab (Wei LAB), published his first book, “Doctor Dyslexia Dude!,” in 2018 with his wife Inshirah. Now, Robinson is launching his second book, “Doctor Dyslexia Dude and the Battle for Resilience.”

When reading his book to children, WMTV/Ch. 15 explains how Robinson will dress up like Doctor Dyslexia Dude, the main character in his books.

“I’m taking a risk by dressing up like this. I could be vulnerable,” he explains in the report. “I want to let you know it’s okay to be different. It’s okay to fulfill your dreams, live your dreams, be okay with who you are as yourself and not be embarrassed about your learning disability or maybe stuff you’re going through with yourself.”

Once 10,000 of his books are sold, 20 percent of the proceeds will go to scholarships with the International Dyslexia Association. To support the effort and contribute to the book drive, click here.
