Analysis of UW System Hmong undergrads find low and declining enrollments

A team of HMoob (Hmong)* American undergraduates mentored by UW-Madison education researchers has completed the first analysis of University of Wisconsin System student data disaggregated by race and ethnicity for the state’s largest Asian ethnic population. The team finds that except for UW–Oshkosh and UW–Green Bay, UW System enrollment of HMoob Americans is proportionally low and declining, particularly at the state’s flagship UW–Madison campus.

UW-Madison’s Omar Poler (Sokaogon Ojibwe) was featured in a Wisconsin State Journal report headlined, “Know Your Madisonian: Bringing Indigenous Perspective to UW–Madison Campus.” As an American Indian Curriculum Services consultant for the School of Education, Poler supports education about and creates learning opportunities regarding First Nations.

American Association for Blacks in Higher Education honors dissertation by alum Lee-Johnson

UW–Madison alumna Jamila Lee-Johnson received second place honors in the Dissertation of the Year Award competition from the American Association for Blacks in Higher Education. Lee-Johnson earned her Ph.D. from the School of Education’s Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis in 2019. Her dissertation is titled, “I am Becoming":  Understanding  the Experiences of Undergraduate Black women at Historically Black Colleges and Universities in Elected Student Leadership Positions”

UW–Madison’s Pauline Ho receives 2020 Psychological Science Research Grant

Pauline Ho received the 2020 Psychological Science Research Grant from the American Psychological Association of Graduate Students (APAGS). The Ph.D. student with the human development program within the School of Education’s Department of Educational Psychology aims to better understand how individual and contextual factors interact to chart the course of ethnic and racial identity development of African American students attending predominantly white institutions.

UW-Madison’s Shawn Robinson and his newest book were recently featured in a WMTV/Ch. 15 report headlined, “Author writes second book for children with dyslexia after learning to read at 18.” Robinson, a senior research associate with the Wisconsin Equity and Inclusion Lab (Wei LAB), is launching his second book, “Doctor Dyslexia Dude and the Battle for Resilience.”

Milwaukee public radio profiles UW-Madison alum Stanford Taylor

Milwaukee’s public radio, WUWM 89.7-FM, recently profiled UW-Madison alumna Carolyn Stanford Taylor. Among many achievements in Stanford Taylor’s career, she is the first black woman to lead Wisconsin’s Department of Public Instruction. Stanford Taylor earned an undergraduate degree in elementary education in 1978 and a master's from the School of Education’s Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis in 1979.

UW-Madison’s Nachman authors study examining campus climate for autistic LGBTQ students

UW-Madison’s Brett Nachman, a doctoral candidate with the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis, served as the lead author on a case study article exploring campus climates for autistic LGBTQ college students. The article, which Nachman wrote with Dr. Ryan A. Miller (UNC-Charlotte) and Dr. Edlyn Vallejo Peña (California Lutheran University), was published in the Journal of Cases in Educational Leadership.
