Dr. Charleston is the inaugural Associate Dean for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at the School of Education. In this role, he provides leadership to faculty, staff, and students in developing and implementing strategic initiatives that promote the School of Education and UW–Madison’s mission for diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Key School of Education Initiatives
College Access Program (CAP)
The College Access Program is a summer enrichment program for first-generation college students or students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. We offer this program to 9th and 10th graders to provide early exposure to opportunities in higher education.
Tomorrow's Educators for Equity in Madison (TEEM)
TEEM Scholars’ programming is designed to prepare students for college and careers in education. TEEM Scholars recruits a diverse pool of Madison Metropolitan School District students each year who have an interest in improving the educational opportunities for all students in the district.
Education Graduate Research Scholars (Ed-GRS)
Ed-GRS is a community of graduate students from diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds receiving the Advanced Opportunity Fellowship in the School of Education. Ed-GRS offers students a support network of peers and assists students in becoming members of a supportive community of UW–Madison graduate students, faculty and staff.
Wisconsin's Equity and Inclusion Laboratory (Wei LAB)
The mission of the Wei LAB is to design, conduct, and disseminate research that informs policymakers, practitioners, and concerned citizens on how to best promote equitable and inclusive learning and work environments in education in general, and higher education in particular.
Trans Research Lab (TRL)
The TRL is a social-justice-driven lab conducting research that affirms the experiences of TNG (trans, nonbinary, gender-nonconforming) and gender diverse individuals. Through a critical lens, our work aims to meaningfully transform and advance the position of TNG and gender diverse issues within the field of psychology.
Counseling Psychology Training Clinic
The Counseling Psychology Training Clinic is a training facility for the Counseling Psychology graduate training programs. It offers high quality, cost efficient, and multiculturally competent psychological and mental health services, as well as diversity-focused initiatives including the Diversity & Social Justice Committee and Diversity Dialogues.
American Indian Curriculum Services
The American Indian Curriculum Services Office is housed in the School of Education's Teacher Education Center. It is designed to provide faculty, staff, and students in the School of Education with information on Wisconsin’s American Indian history, culture, and tribal sovereignty.
Faculty Diversity
To ensure school leadership and faculty comprise broad and diverse viewpoints, the School of Education utilized Target of Opportunity (TOP) funding to hire three targeted faculty: Brian Burt, Duane Lee Holland, Jr., and Darcy Padilla. Currently, people of color represent 36% of our faculty against a higher education benchmark of 30%. We remain committed to equitable and inclusive recruitment practices.
Rehabilitation Psychology and Special Education Research
The Rehabilitation Psychology and Special Education department is leading research that will advance accessibility and awareness for issues including vocational rehabilitation, educational outcomes for youth with disabilities, adaptive fitness, and psychological wellness for persons with disabilities.
Minority Student Achievement Network (MSAN)
The Minority Student Achievement Network (MSAN) is a national coalition of multiracial school districts that have come together to understand and eliminate opportunity and achievement gaps that persist in their schools.
Summer Education Research Program (SERP)
The Summer Education Research Program (SERP) is sponsored by the School of Education and the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Graduate School. The program provides underrepresented undergraduate students interested in pursuing graduate studies in the academic fields within the School of Education a valuable opportunity to engage in independent research guided by a faculty mentor.
Land Acknowledgement
Humans have called this place home for 12,000 years and counting. Today, the University of Wisconsin–Madison rests in the ancestral land of the Ho-Chunk Nation, the People of the Big Voice, who have called this place Teejop (day-JOPE) for time immemorial. We as a university community continue to create and build upon our partnerships with the 12 First Nations of Wisconsin.
