UW-Madison’s Tim Russell, music director with the School of Education’s Dance Department, performed live with choreographer Gerald Casel’s “Cover your mouth when you smile” at the 2019 Kuandu Arts Festival in Taiwan from Nov. 1 to 2.
The performance is a movement essay that examines the complexities of racial identity in contemporary life, the condition of racial melancholia, the impossibility of the model minority, and the concept of mimicry in Asian immigrant cultures.
After the performances, Russell returned to the U.S. to conduct a two-week artist residency at the University of Minnesota, beginning Nov. 4.
