UW-Madison’s Beth Fields is helping lead sessions of an upcoming series of events titled, “Preparing to Care.”
A preview of the series notes: “No one is ever prepared to become a caregiver for a loved one diagnosed with dementia. This series is designed to help you prepare and plan for the future.”
These events are being held on Wednesdays, March 18, 25, and April 1, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Madison Senior Center, 330 W. Mifflin St.
Fields is an assistant professor with the School of Education’s occupational therapy program, which is housed within the Department of Kinesiology. She is helping lead the first session on March 18 titled, “Preparing the Home.” Fields is leading the session with occupational therapist Kayla Olson, and the two will cover home modifications and safety with a hands on learning presentation.
The second session is titled, “A Day in the Life …” and it will be led by Shannon Wuensch, a community outreach coordinator at the Alzheimer’s Association who will talk about topics including brain health, nutrition, and activities.
The final week’s event is called, “Caring for the Caregiver” and it will be led by Jane De Broux, Dane County caregiver program coordinator. She will cover resources and supports available for caregivers. Joy Schmidt, Dane County dementia care specialist, will discuss the grief process.
