UW-Madison alum Belmore named interim superintendent of Madison Schools

UW-Madison alumna Jane Belmore was recently named the interim superintendent of the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD).

Belmore received her Ph.D. in 2000 from the School of Education’s Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis.

Belmore will take over once current Superintendent Jen Cheatham steps down at the end of August. Belmore, a retired MMSD teacher and administrator, was selected by the Madison School Board, and will likely be in the position until June 2020.

“I’m excited to be back,” Belmore tells the Capital Times “As I’ve watched from afar, I think there’s a really strong leadership team here. They’ve got a great new strategic plan and framework that they’re working from. And I really just wanted to come in and be able to support the teachers and principals as they move forward and support the board as they start the process of searching for a new superintendent.”Belmore also served as the interim superintendent during the 2012-13 school year. Before this, she worked for MMSD for 29 years as a teacher and then as the assistant superintendent for elementary schools, retiring in 2005.

According to the Capital Times, Belmore was the clear choice based on the search process. School Board President Gloria Reyes says, “What we heard was someone who knew the district very well, someone who had experience teaching in our schools and someone who can continue the good work that’s happening now and support our leadership team.”
