The UW-Madison Dance Department presents a joint concert featuring Kate Corby & Dancers and the Chicago-based dance company The Seldoms, Nov. 14-16 at the Margaret H’Doubler Performance Space, Lathrop Hall.
Professor and Dance Department Chair Kate Corby will present the premiere of “dancelikeaman,” a work made with long-time collaborators Josh Anderson and Mikey Rioux exploring masculinity and gender identity through the lenses of both a career in dance and the gender socialization of boys. The piece includes text, video, and a toy chest full of vintage He-Man figurines.
The Seldoms will perform an excerpt of “Exit Disclaimer: Science and Fiction Ahead,” the company’s 2012 foray into the divisive national debate about climate change and divergent positions on denial, skepticism, and indifference to urgency. The performance incorporates humor, physical action, spoken word, resistance, and athletic dancing. The 2019 revision will include expanded text by collaborating playwright Seth Bockley. Choreography and direction for the work are by Artistic Director Carrie Hanson, who has been the 2019 Fall Interdisciplinary Artist in Residence through the Division of the Arts at UW-Madison. The Seldoms will perform its full length concert “Floe” at the Wisconsin Union Theater, Jan. 22-24.
Performances are set for: Thursday, Nov. 14 at 8 p.m.; Friday, Nov. 15 at 8 p.m.; and Saturday, Nov. 16 at 2:30 p.m.
Tickets are $22 for the general public and $16 for students and seniors. Remaining tickets will be available at the door in Lathrop Hall starting one hour before the performance. All tickets are reserved seating.
Corby is an active professional choreographer, dividing her time between Madison and Chicago, and established Kate Corby & Dancers in the Midwest in 2009. Her choreography has been called “ingenious” by the Chicago Reader, “jarringly beautiful” by the Isthmus, and was a Critics’ Pick in Time Out Chicago five times from 2011-2012. “Compelling” and “full of gestured conflict and impish daring” (Chicago Tribune).
Kate Corby & Dancers is a uniquely eclectic group of contemporary Chicago dance artists led Corby. The company’s collaborative work has been seen in the Midwest, New York, California and internationally in Canada, Mexico, Brazil and Taiwan.
Hanson has designed projects with practitioners of visual arts, theater, music/sound design, fashion, and architecture. In 2016, she was named Chicago Tribune’s “Chicagoan of the Year in Dance” and honored for her “brawny, brainy movement.”
The Seldoms are a Chicago-based dance company committed to igniting thought and understanding of real-world issues to their audiences. Dance is the center of their work but they also incorporate compelling use of architecture, installation, video, sound and fashion. Known for performing in unique spaces including an outdoor pool and a truck depot, The Seldoms has toured nationally and to Russia, Taiwan, and Scotland.
