UW-Madison’s Fields co-authors hippotherapy report published by the journal Disability and Rehabilitation

Alongside lead author Wendy Wood of Colorado State University, UW-Madison’s Beth Fields recently co-authored a report that was featured in the journal Disability and Rehabilitation. Fields is an assistant professor with the School of Education’s Department of Kinesiology. The report is titled, "Hippotherapy: a systematic mapping review of peer-reviewed research, 1980 to 2018."

Conways create two funds to support School of Education

UW-Madison alumni Virginia "Ginny" Conway and Michael Conway recently created two funds in support of the School of Education, one with the Department of Kinesiology's Adapted Fitness Program and the other in the Dance Department. Virginia Conway received a degree in physical education from the School of Education in 1978, while Michael Conway received his degree from UW-Madison’s Department of Engineering in 1978.

Wisconsin Public Radio notes the work of UW-Madison’s Department of Kinesiology

Wisconsin Public Radio (WPR) shared a report that notes the work of UW-Madison's Julie Stamm and the Department of Kinesiology's efforts to better engage with students in large lectures. Started in 2016, the Redesigning for Active Learning in High-Enrollment Courses (REACH) initiative at UW–Madison is aimed at increasing engagement and attendance in large lecture classes. While some teachers are choosing not to implement REACH in their classrooms, Stamm, who is an associate lecturer with the School of Education's Department of Kinesiology, has embraced it in her human anatomy course that has several hundred students in it.

Koltyn, Crombie participate in mental health symposium hosted by American College of Sports Medicine

UW-Madison’s Kelli Koltyn and Kevin Crombie recently participated in a symposium titled “Exercise and the Endocannabinoid System: Implications for Mental Health” at the annual meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine in Orlando, Florida. Koltyn is a professor with the School of Education’s Department of Kinesiology, while Crombie is a graduate student with the department.

UW-Madison’s Koltyn, Andreae receive Contemporary Social Problems Initiative Award

Kelli Koltyn and Susan Andreae recently received a UW-Madison Contemporary Social Problems Initiative Award for their project titled “Enhancing Maintenance of Standing Up and Moving more in Older Adults.” Koltyn is a professor with the School of Education’s Department of Kinesiology, while Andreae is an assistant professor with the department. Older adults spend most of the day in sedentary behavior increasing their risk for chronic health conditions, functional limitations, and premature mortality. Thus, there is a need for community-based interventions that reduce sedentary behavior and get older adults moving more throughout the day.

UW-Madison’s Dempsey receives honorary degree from Western University

UW-Madison’s Jerry Dempsey, who is recognized as a leading authority on pulmonary physiology, received an honorary degree from Western University in his hometown of London, Ontario, Canada, on June 18. Dempsey, who earned his Ph.D. from the School of Education's Department of Kinesiology in 1966, remains actively involved with the unit.

Frost, Andrae participate in the Health Equity Leadership Institute

UW-Madison’s Nick Frost and Susan Andrae participated in the Collaborative Center for Health Equity’s (CCHE) Health Equity Leadership Institute (HELI), which took place June 17-21. Frost is an assistant professor with the School of Education’s Department of Counseling Psychology. Andrae is an assistant professor with the School of Education’s Department of Kinesiology.

UW-Madison’s Gattenby receives Badger Battalion Certificate of Appreciation

UW-Madison's Tim Gattenby received a certificate of appreciation from the Badger Battalion. Gattenby works to help cadets meet minimum requirements to join the armed services and also helps cadets and leaders alike understand lifelong health and reducing injuries. Gattenby is a distinguished faculty associate with the School of Education’s Department of Kinesiology and the director of its adapted fitness and personal training program.
