A performance in CorningWork’s “The World as We Know It” from UW-Madison’s Li Chiao-Ping, a Vilas Research Professor with the School of Education’s Dance Department, was recently reviewed by Pittsburgh (PGH) City Paper. “The World as We Know It,” as described by Lisa Cunningham from the PGH City Paper, tells the stories of six women “of a certain age” in the context of the #MeToo movement and gender dynamics in the workplace.

UW-Madison’s Chris Walker, a professor with the School of Education’s Dance Department, was recently nominated for a VIV Award in the category of choreography for his work on the “Secret Life of Bees, the Musical," based on a novel of the same name. When working on “Bees” in spring of 2019, Walker learned that UW-Madison alumni Nathaniel Stampley and Joe Cassidy were cast to play roles in the musical.

Liz Sexe’s “Untitled: For the sake of progress” performance raised over $350 for Brighter Tomorrows in Sparta/Tomah, a human service agency dedicated to empowering survivors of domestic violence through the provision of safe housing, supportive counseling, and legal advocacy services. On Oct. 26, Sexe presented the work again in Madison at Gates of Heaven with all proceeds for this concert going to Domestic Abuse Intervention Services (DAIS). Sexe is an associate lecturer with the UW-Madison School of Education’s Dance Department.

UW-Madison’s Tim Russell, music director with the School of Education’s Dance Department, performed live with choreographer Gerald Casel’s “Cover your mouth when you smile” at the 2019 Kuandu Arts Festival in Taiwan from Nov. 1 to 2. After the performances, Russell returned to the U.S. to conduct a two-week artist residency at the University of Minnesota, beginning Nov. 4.

The School of Education’s Dance Department, along with Peggy Choy Dance company and UW-Madison’s Asian American Studies program, presents “Flight: Torn like a rose,” which will be held at the H’Doubler Performance Space in Lathrop Hall from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2. Peggy Choy, an associate professor with the Dance Department, has a foundation in Korean and Javanese dance, Asian martial arts, and is a certified teacher of Dayan Qigong — a 1,700 year-old vital energy force practice from China.

UW–Madison’s Dance Department is opening a stunning permanent exhibition in Lathrop Hall’s new Gallery Space titled, “Radical Pedagogy: Margaret H’Doubler, Anna Halprin, and American Dance, 1916-Present.” The exhibition was made possible via a generous donation from Jody Gottfried Arnhold ('65) and John Arnhold. The photographs, visual art, and films that fill Lathrop’s Gallery Space bear witness to dance pioneer Margaret H’Doubler’s radical pedagogy and its inherently Midwestern progressivism — when dance became a rigorous academic discipline and the body became the route to scientific inquiry, self-discovery, creativity, and citizenship.

The School of Education’s Dance Department and Art Department will co-host Carrie Hanson as the Fall 2019 Division of the Arts Interdisciplinary Artist-in-Residence, with Kate Corby as lead faculty. Hanson is a choreographer, director, performer, and dance educator. She serves as the artistic director of The Seldoms, and uses dance and performance to reference social, political, and environmental issues.

Jin-Wen Yu Dance and UW–Madison’s Dance Department are presenting “Page,” an evening of thought-provoking and visually stimulating contemporary dance. Shows run Sept. 12-14 at Lathrop Hall’s Margaret H'Doubler Performance Space. This concert features Yu’s choreography spanning from 2016 to the present, including works that have been performed nationally and internationally. Yu is a professor with the School of Education’s Dance Department.

UW-Madison alumni Virginia "Ginny" Conway and Michael Conway recently created two funds in support of the School of Education, one with the Department of Kinesiology's Adapted Fitness Program and the other in the Dance Department. Virginia Conway received a degree in physical education from the School of Education in 1978, while Michael Conway received his degree from UW-Madison’s Department of Engineering in 1978.
