The School of Education Gallery features work from students enrolled in Art Department faculty member Laurie Beth Clark’s course, “Art and Social Change.” The show is titled “In Dialogue.” The exhibit explores themes about the human experience, utilizing various mediums to discuss contemporary dilemmas, such as waste and violence. “In Dialogue” will be open through to Jan. 3, with an opening reception from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 13.

UW-Madison’s José Carlos Teixeira received two major awards for his experimental documentary film, “On Exile,” at The Artists Forum Festival of the Moving Image in New York. At the intersection of art, cinema, anthropology, and politics, “On Exile” reflects on the refugee experience, expanding on issues of migration, displacement, and otherness. Teixeira is an assistant professor with the School of Education’s Art Department.

The new UW-Madison accelerated master of science in Design and Innovation gives new meaning to collaboration. Combining expertise from five schools and colleges with team-based interaction, the program promises to offer students a breadth of highly desired skills. The 12-month, face-to-face program resulted from a partnership between the College of Engineering, the Wisconsin School of Business, the School of Human Ecology, the School of Education’s Art Department, and the Information School in the College of Letters and Science. The first cohort will start the program in May 2020.

UW–Madison’s Leslie Smith III is a contemporary abstract artist and associate professor with the School of Education’s Art Department. His work, which is primarily oil paint on shaped canvasses, is displayed both nationally and internationally, and is currently on display at the Galerie Isabelle Gounod in Paris. “I think if you’ve never had the opportunity to view art and be critical of it,” Smith says, “it’s an experience worth having because I think when you’ve had that experience, it’s a lot easier to maybe understand some other seemingly unrelated issue or concern that you might have with the world, or with yourself."

The work of the School of Education’s Felipe Gacharná and his brother, Carlos Eduardo Gacharná, is being showcased in the Academic Staff Art Gallery in Bascom Hall. Their photography series is titled, “Flow: The Art of Felipe and Carlos Eduardo Gacharná.” An opening reception is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 14, from 2:45 to 3:30 p.m. The Academic Staff Art Gallery is housed in room 270 of Bascom Hall.

UW–Madison's Division of the Arts has opened the call for applications for the 2020 Awards in the Creative Arts. The Division of the Arts provides research support to UW-Madison faculty, staff, and students in the arts, and each spring it recognizes achievements and professional service in the arts. The grants awarded support future creative endeavors and research. The deadline to apply is Friday, Nov. 1, at 3 p.m.

The School of Education’s Dance Department and Art Department will co-host Carrie Hanson as the Fall 2019 Division of the Arts Interdisciplinary Artist-in-Residence, with Kate Corby as lead faculty. Hanson is a choreographer, director, performer, and dance educator. She serves as the artistic director of The Seldoms, and uses dance and performance to reference social, political, and environmental issues.

UW-Madison’s Yeohyun Ahn recently delivered a presentation at TypeCon, an annual typography-focused convention that took place from Aug. 28 to Sept. 1 in Minneapolis. Ahn is an assistant professor of graphic design with the School of Education’s Art Department. Ahn's presentation, “TYPE+CODE III,” addressed the possibilities of an extension of the aesthetic of computational typography from cyberspace to physical space by using digital fabrication.

A show from UW–Madison’s Derrick Buisch, a professor of painting and drawing with the Art Department, is being housed at the School of Education Gallery through Oct. 30. This exhibition is titled, “Intermission” and features paintings from Buisch that he completed during a recent sabbatical. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, Sept. 19, from 5 to 7 p.m.

With the start of the new academic year, the leadership within UW-Madison’s Division of the Arts will be transitioning. Outgoing Director John Baldacchino will assume a role as professor of arts education in the School of Education’s Art Department. Susan Zaeske, associate dean of arts and humanities in the College of Letters & Science, will serve as the interim director.
